The European Benchmark Chinese Language Project (EBCL) team held its first seminar between the 20th and 21th May 2011 in La Sapienza, University of Rome. Apart from the project team, Professor Joel Bellassen, a member of the project advisory panel and the general inspector for Chinese at the French Ministry of Education also attended the seminar.

The Rome seminar offered an open session on the 20th May which was attended by about 40 participants from schools and universities in a number of European countries. In addition to general introduction to the EBCL project, there were also reports on preliminary findings of the survey  on Chinese language teaching in European universities that the project partners had done since the beginning of the year and presentation of case studies from the four  associate school partners of the project: Kingsford Community School, UK, Geschwister Scholl Gesamtschule, Germany, Collège-Lycée Emile Zola de Rennes, France, and The Convitto Nazionale di Roma “Vittorio Emanuele II”, Italy. The Rome seminar also gave an opportunity for the project team to meet and discuss about the work so far and to plan the work in the next stage. A time table and a work schedule were agreed at the end of the seminar.

The next project seminar will be held in mid-October in Paris, when the project team plans to propose Chinese competence descriptors with regard to CEFR at the fundamental level A for open consultation. Further details will follow when available on this project website.
