What is EBCL Project?

EBCL is a European project currently carried on by a team of four Universities:  School of Oriental and African Studies (University of London), University of Rennes 2, Freie Universität of Berlin and University of Rome “La Sapienza”. The aim of the project is to create a benchmark framework for Chinese language based upon the Common European Framework of Reference, taking into consideration both linguistic knowledge and inter-cultural skills. Benchmarking Chinese language will provide a useful reference framework to standardize Chinese language teaching and assessment across Europe and beyond.

Berlin Seminar

Since the last two seminars (Rome, May 2011 and Paris October 2011) our project partners have created a data bank, based on grand surveys, of existing CEFR-related syllabi for Chinese language teaching in schools and universities across main European countries with a focus on regions of France, Germany, Britain and Italy. A more recent outcome from the Paris Seminar is that project partners have jointly proposed a tentative benchmark framework of competence descriptors (Interaction, Reception, and Production) for Chinese language at A1 and A2 levels, with an additional dimension on the graphemic competence. A selection of sample activities, in association with proposed lists of themes/topics, language functions, and vocabulary, have also been demonstrated and discussed with audience.

The open session of the Berlin Seminar is to report on the updated results of the project progress in order to share the proposed benchmark framework and to consult and exchange views with experts of the CEFR and of the existing CEFR-related syllabi for Chinese language from both universities and schools. Paperwork on the proposed framework and its components will be circulated with registered participants two weeks in advance by Email  in order to allow enough time for your critical reading The seminar is also a good opportunity to network with other colleagues and institutions that share the similar interest to the project.
